….and so it begins
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
The HMS Challenger set sail from Portsmouth Harbour, England on Saturday December 21st 1872. This was the first day of a journey that would span 4 years and see the vessel crossing the Atlantic ocean 3 times in the name of Victorian Science. I first set off from Portsmouth Wednesday Novmber 12th 2003 but today is the first day of a journey that will span 2 years and see me crossing the landscape of Japan in the name of contemporary art.
…
The initial phase of the project (from September 2006 to Easter 2007) will see me researching the locations of the photographs that the Challenger took and re-taking the images as they are now. I intend to re-take them technically as close to the originals as possible including featuring people if necessary. That said, most of the images on this blog (unless said otherwise) will be research and scouting photographs whilst i research the format with which to take the final images. The Challenger images themselves presented here are used with the kind permission of the Natural History Museum, London and are not to be used without their permission. http://piclib.nhm.ac.uk/piclib/www/
